House robberies on the rise as 3 incidents occurred only hours apart
A wave of home invasions leaves residents on edge

A shocking home invasion took place in Klarinet Extension 3, leaving the community shaken.
According to police, on May 14, a shop owner had just finished locking up his store and was preparing to return to his room when the incident occurred.
While drifting off to sleep, he overheard voices outside and decided to check his surroundings discreetly. It was then that he spotted two unknown men lurking near his residence. Alarmed, he reached for his cellphone to contact the police, especially after hearing gunshots earlier that night.
Before he could make the call, the two men forcefully entered his room. One of the suspects allegedly wielded a stick and struck him on the head and shoulders.
They demanded money, and the shop owner, fearing for his life, complied, handing over an undisclosed amount of cash.
In a fortunate turn of events, the victim managed to escape and seek help while awaiting police to arrive.
The second incident occurred in Barend Street in Del Judor.
According to police reports, on May 13, a man was inside his room when he heard his domestic worker screaming.
Moments later, two unknown males entered the premises. They allegedly pointed him with a firearm and demanded that the safe be opened. In an attempt to mislead the intruders, the man insisted that the safe did not belong to him.
However, the suspects forcefully opened the safe, stealing multiple firearms and an undisclosed amount of cash.
Before fleeing, the perpetrators also took the victim’s Toyota Hilux, making a swift getaway. Authorities later recovered the stolen vehicle in Spring Valley. Police are actively investigating the case.
A home invasion in Van den Heever Street in Extension 8 left a couple injured and their belongings stolen.
On May 12, the couple who were asleep were alerted by their domestic worker, only to come face-to-face with three armed intruders upon opening their bedroom door.
The suspects allegedly assaulted the woman and her husband, demanding money. In a desperate attempt to comply, the husband handed over cash before the intruders proceeded to search the home.
Upon discovering a safe, they demanded the keys, but the man, disoriented amid the chaos, was unable to locate the keys. What followed was a terrifying ordeal.
Gunshots rang in their ears, and the woman discovered her husband had been shot in the leg. The suspects fled the scene. After the suspects made their escape, the woman rushed to alert a neighbour, who had already contacted her son, upon hearing the gunshots.
Local authorities are investigating the incident, urging anyone with information to come forward.
Captain Eddie Hall, spokesperson of Witbank SAPS, advises: “If confronted during a robbery, remain calm and comply with the suspects’ demands. Do not mislead them about safes or cash in the home, as this may escalate the situation. Pay close attention to details – observe their voices, clothing, distinguishing marks, language, height, and the weapons they carry. These observations can be crucial for investigations. Once the suspects have left, immediately activate your panic button or contact your armed response team and the police. Be clear about whether medical assistance is required. Lastly, avoid disturbing areas that may contain evidence. If you notice anything the suspects might have left behind, point it out to authorities to aid in their investigation.”
