Teen arrested after video of assault on 2 teachers

This arrest followed an attempt by the boy and his mother to open a case against the two teachers, but the video evidence led to the teen's prosecution instead.

A teenager from a local high school appeared in Witbank Magistrate’s Court yesterday after an incident where two teachers were pushed off steps in front of the administration office.

Video footage shows the 18-year-old learner pushing one teacher down the steps and then pushing a second teacher who came to her aid on September 9.

“The teen was arrested after police viewed the video, which contradicted the boy and his mother’s attempt to open a case against the teachers,” said police spokesperson Sergeant David Ratau, who is also the Adopt-a-Cop of the school.

The case against the learner has been postponed to November 12, and he was released on a warning.

In addition to the legal proceedings, the school’s headmaster confirmed a disciplinary hearing for the learner was taking place today.

“Remember, the learner was not yet found guilty,” he said.

The school’s headmaster said a statement was sent to the Department of Education.

Gerald Sambo, communication officer of the Education Department, said a full report will be requested from the district.
