Coalition talks loom as ANC falls short of majority in Emalahleni

Parties prepare for delicate governance negotiations after the municipal election results leave the local council hung.

The Electoral Commission of South Africa has concluded vote counting in Emalahleni, officially declaring the final municipal election results.

The ANC emerged as the leading party with 31.45% of the vote, securing 23 wards across the municipality, but failed to obtain any proportional seats.

The DA established itself as the official opposition party after capturing 23.42% of the votes. The party secured 10 wards and added seven proportional seats to its tally.

Coalition talks loom

The MKP finished in third place with 14.16% of the vote share, taking one ward and securing nine proportional seats.

With no party achieving an outright majority, formal coalition negotiations will now commence to determine governance in the municipality.
