Women-led operation puts N4 motorists under the spotlight
Women in uniform turn up the heat on motorists.
More than 350 vehicles were stopped and checked during a women-only multidisciplinary roadblock at the Middelburg Toll Plaza on the N4.
The Women’s Month operation, held on August 21, was led by the Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison (DCSSL), with female officials from various law-enforcement and public-service agencies taking part.
Roadside stops and speed checks were also conducted along the N12 Witbank and N4 Belfast routes.
Fines issued and vehicles seized
A total of 157 fines were issued for various traffic violations, with speeding accounting for most of the offences.
The fire department inspected 51 fire extinguishers, with 14 motorists fined for non-compliance. Three vehicles with defects were issued with notices to be discontinued.
Immigration officials also arrested four foreign nationals who they claimed were found with invalid passports. SARS seized a foreign-registered vehicle driven by a South African who could not produce the required documentation.
Outstanding fines recovered
The department’s Automated Number Plate Recognition vehicle, known as Nyamsoro, recovered R9 500 in unpaid traffic fines from motorists.
Road safety officials used the opportunity to educate motorists, sharing safety advice with 156 drivers and 110 passengers.
Addressing officers before the operation, DCSSL head Gloria Mazibuko encouraged the officials to continue working hard beyond Women’s Month.
“Do not compete with your male counterparts; instead, support one another and honour the responsibility that you have been entrusted with to ensure that the people of Mpumalanga, our tourists and every road user in the province are safe,” she said.
