Hlalanikahle woman in eMalahleni Court after boyfriend opens counter-case

A Hlalanikahle woman was arrested yesterday after her since-released boyfriend opened a counter-case against her.

A 38-year-old complainant has been arrested and is due to appear in the eMalahleni Magistrate’s Court today, October 2.

Her arrest follows a protest by Hlalanikahle community members at Vosman Police Station after her boyfriend was released without appearing in court.

The complainant was arrested on October 1, days after alleging that her boyfriend of a few months vandalised her home and assaulted her while she was carrying her five-year-old child.

Counter-case opened

According to Vosman police spokesperson Colonel Vusi Mahlangu, her arrest followed a counter-case opened by her since-released boyfriend, who alleges that she assaulted him on the night of the incident.

She previously reported that the man arrived at her home at about 22:00 on September 25 after allegedly making threats earlier that day.

She said he broke windows and forced his way inside, where he allegedly assaulted her.

Alleged assault

She said she managed to escape after he slipped on water he had poured over her.

“That spilled water is what saved me because I don’t know what could’ve happened if he had not fallen,” the woman said.

Reason for release

The suspect was arrested in the early hours of September 26 and released on September 28, the day he was due in court, without appearing before a magistrate.

“The prosecutor decided not to put the case on the roll because there were outstanding investigations which the prosecutor directed the investigator to go and complete and bring the docket back for a next court date,” Mahlangu said.
