Benoni man found hanging from tree

An inquest docket has been opened after a 59-year-old man was found hanging from a tree in the Crystal Park area of Benoni, on the East Rand.

According to police spokesperson officer Tryna Maritz, the man was found by his employer in a veld opposite a residential complex, Benoni City Times reported.

“The employer was planning to pick him [the deceased] up from his house when he found the doors to the house open and no one inside,” said Maritz.

The employer then drove off, and as he was driving out, he saw the man hanging from a tree. Police personnel were then alerted.

Police suspect the man may have committed suicide on Sunday. However, they are not sure why he may have done so. It is also believed an alleged argument that took place on Friday night may have led to the man disappearing on Saturday and Sunday.

“His son was searching for him at his home and found the doors open, but no sign of his father,” said Maritz.

A postmortem will be conducted soon to determine the exact cause of death.

Earlier this month, the body of an unknown man was found hanging from a tree near the M1 in Bramley, near Sandton, Johannesburg.

According to police, the man’s body was discovered by a passerby on his way to work.
