WATCH: A look at how matric learners in Alberton schools performed
A school in Alberton managed to achieve a 100% pass rate while others hovered over 90% and some showed improvement when compared to the previous years.

The matric class of 2024 performed incredibly well across all public and private schools in the country, and schools in the Alberton area played a role too.
Hoërskool Dinamika achieved a 100% pass rate while others hovered over 90%. Some showed improvement when compared to the previous years.
Gauteng education MEC Matome Chiloane was beaming with pride during the announcement of the results on January 13.
“Gauteng achieved the highest number of candidates qualifying for bachelor studies, ever, in 2024, with, 66 979 who wrote, qualifying with a bachelor pass. This is over 10 000 from the 56 554 bachelor passes in 2023. All 15 districts showed an improvement in the bachelor rate,” said Chiloane.

“Nationally, we contributed 20% of all bachelors achieved countrywide. Gauteng has once again, this year, achieved significant milestones in respect of national performance and we do have many reasons to celebrate with our learners and educators.
“It is also important to recognise that the improvements remain sustainable even while we respond to a growing learner population in Gauteng,” added Chiloane.
The number of schools in Gauteng that achieved a 95% and above pass rate has improved. 2024 saw 372 schools achieve above 95% compared to 297 in 2023, and 147 schools achieved 100% compared to 129 in 2023.
About 14 757 more girls wrote the matric exam than boys, with 88,8% of boys passing compared to 88,2% of girls. 52,7% of girl learners achieved a bachelor pass compared to 47,2% of boy learners. The Minister of Basic Education, Siviwe Gwarube, also praised the country’s matric class of 2024.

“Despite challenges, we have seen the highest rate of learners enrolled for Grade 12 in 2024 writing the NSC exams since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.
“We are proud of the Class of 2024. Approximately 97% of learners enrolled for Grade 12 in 2024 ultimately wrote the NSC exams in 2024,” she said.
“The Class of 2024 entered Grade Eight in 2020 at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, which was a huge disruption to teaching and learning globally.
“But like the resilience of the protea, South Africa’s national flower and a symbol of renewal and strength, the Class of 2024 seems to have drawn strength from adversity, emerging more determined and ready to flourish, proving that from the harshest conditions, greatness can bloom,” added Gwarube.
