Ward committee reaches out to Alberton Train Station residents

Ward 37 committee members recently led a women empowerment and skills development programme at Alberton Train Station.

To end Women’s Month, Ward 37 committee members presented viable women empowering programme to residents of Alberton Train Station informal settlement on September 3.

The group of women was educated on safe sexual relations, maintaining hygiene and sustaining themselves through a vegetable garden. They were also taught how to knit and crochet to earn a living.

Vumatel also joined hands with the group and donated at least 150 sanitary towels. The group of women was provided meals as speakers took turns in addressing them on the day.

Ward 37 Clr Ivan Naidoo said the visit to the settlement was prompted after one of their members decided to host the women empowerment event.

“I believe that 16 days of activism is never enough and we should do such programmes every day of our lives. We understand society’s needs, and we want to bring education to them. We joined hands with Vumatel so we will be looking to work together on other projects,” he said.

Speaking on behalf of the community, leader Samuel Makhafola thanked the team for their visitation and declared the event a massive success.
