Brackenhurst resident raises concerns over neglected Hennie Alberts bridge
A Brackenhurst resident is calling for urgent action as the Hennie Alberts bridge falls into disrepair.
Brackenhurst resident Charmaine Peense has voiced her frustration over the neglected state of the Hennie Alberts bridge, which is located just behind her home.
The bridge is surrounded by overgrown grass and trees, creating an environment that she and other residents find it unsafe and unkept.
“The embankments are covered with grass, and the area looks abandoned,” said Prince.

In addition to the overgrown vegetation, she also highlighted a large pothole on the bridge near Aandblom Street, posing a hazard to motorists.
Having lived in Brackenhurst for 44 years, Peense believes that the area does not receive the same level of service delivery as others.
“We’re paying tax and rates, but the grass and the trees don’t get cut,” she expressed.
According to her, issues such as fixing streetlights, filling potholes, and clearing overgrown areas have always been a struggle for residents.
The Alberton Record visited the bridge to assess its condition and spoke to a driver who uses the road almost daily.

The driver, who asked to be anonymous, shared a concerning incident he witnessed.
“Yesterday, a driver hit his car in this pothole and got his tyres damaged. Things could have been worse if he had lost control and crashed,” he said.
Beyond being an eyesore, Peense warns that the long grass and trees could also pose a risk to the bridge structure itself, potentially leading to more significant infrastructure problems if left unattended.
The Alberton Record reached out to the City of Ekurhuleni for a response regarding the maintenance of Hennie Alberts bridge, but at the time of publishing, no reply had been received.
