Renowned physician Dr Adri Kok bids farewell to Netcare Alberton

Dr Adri Kok has announced her retirement after an illustrious career marked by groundbreaking contributions to internal medicine.

Dr Johanna Adriana Kok, a prominent figure in SA medicine, has announced her retirement after more than three decades of service.

Born in Johannesburg on January 25, 1960, Kok’s life journey reflects her dedication to internal medicine and commitment to her patients and the medical community.

A humble beginning and academic pursuits

Raised in Joburg, Kok’s deep interest in science and human well-being shaped her path to medicine.

She completed her medical degree (MBBCh) at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in 1983, setting the foundation for a remarkable career.

Kok said her academic journey continued with advanced qualifications, including a Master’s in internal medicine (MMed) and prestigious fellowships, including the Royal College of Physicians in London (FRCP) and the American College of Physicians (FACP).

Kok began her career in 1991 as a specialist physician in solo practice at the Netcare Union and Netcare Clinton hospitals in Alberton.

“My expertise, especially in diabetes management, earned me the trust of over 45 000 patients, including more than 8 000 with diabetes. In April 2022, I joined the esteemed Netcare Alberton Hospital, where I continued to make invaluable contributions until my retirement,” the veteran said.

Her professional footprint also extends internationally.

As the first African president of the International Society of Internal Medicine (ISIM) from 2018 to 2023, Kok led groundbreaking initiatives in diabetes and cardiovascular care.

She represented SA at prestigious global platforms, presenting at conferences from Dubai to Buenos Aires.

A mentor and advocate

Beyond her clinical achievements, Kok’s mentorship and advocacy for medical education were unparalleled.
She was an honorary lecturer at Wits and contributed to several health guidelines, including for diabetes and hypertension.

She was a key figure for over a decade in the Faculty of Consulting Physicians of South Africa (FCPSA), organising their annual congresses, including virtual gatherings during the pandemic.

A specialist physician endocrinologist and Kok’s colleague of 34 years, Dr Bukiwe Peya, reflected on Kok’s influence and said she would miss her.

“Kok has been a mentor, guide and role model. I’ve learnt so much from her, not as a physician only but as a compassionate human being. Her work ethic, integrity and ability to always put her patients first shaped me as a doctor,” Peya said.

Community and humanitarian efforts

Kok’s impact extended far beyond her clinical practice.

She was involved in many community service initiatives, supporting Amcare’s underprivileged families, HIV/Aids education and outreach programmes.

The Netcare Alberton staff celebrate Dr Adriana Kok’s retirement.

“My philanthropic efforts have included financial support for organisations like the National Sea Rescue Institute and Doctors Without Borders, as well as direct assistance to orphanages and homeless shelters,” Kok said.

Well-deserved recognition

In recognition of her lifelong contributions to healthcare, Kok has received many accolades, including the lifetime achievement award from the FCPSA in 2016 and the Christiaan Barnard memorial gold medal from Netcare in 2023.

A personal legacy of dedication

Kok’s retirement marks the end of an era at Netcare, but her legacy will endure through the thousands of patients she cared for, the doctors she mentored and the medical community she strengthened.

As she steps into her next chapter, her contributions will remain a benchmark of excellence in internal medicine.

Her retirement might close a chapter at Netcare, but Kok’s remarkable journey will be remembered for generations.
