Hoërskool Marais Viljoen High School wins big at Ekurhuleni district awards

A learner at the school was declared the overall top achiever in the Ekurhuleni South District.

Hoërskool Marais Viljoen High School’s teachers and top learners were recently honoured at the Ekurhuleni South District Matric Awards.

The school’s teachers were declared the best educators for their subjects in the district.

Jan Potgieter, who was part of the matric class of 2024, was declared the overall top achiever in the Ekurhuleni South District – having competed with fellow pupils from more than 70 Schools in the district for the top spot.

Jan Potgieter is the overall top achiever with a total of eight distinctions. He will study actuarial science at the University of Pretoria (UP).

“We are proud to be part of such an outstanding school, where excellence in education is always the goal. Here’s to continued success and making a difference, together,” said the school in a statement.

Commenting on his win, Jan Potgieter said: “I want to thank God for blessing me with the strength, wisdom, and perseverance to push through the challenges and stay focused on my goals. To my school, Hoërskool Marais Viljoen, thank you for fostering an environment where excellence is encouraged and hard work is valued.

Jan Potgieter was awarded a certificate and a prize for being the overall top learner in Ekurhuleni South District.

“I also want to acknowledge the dedication of our teachers and staff, who played a significant role in shaping my academic journey, and for that, I am truly grateful. To my fellow pupils, let this be a reminder that dedication, balance, and passion will take you far. Continue striving for excellence and never stop believing in your potential. I thank you all,” said Jan to loud cheers and applause.

• Nico Pieterse for mechanical technology.

• Jaco du Preez for agricultural technology.

• Melanie Peens, Susan Pretorius and Magda Schmidt for mathematical literacy.

• René Kuhn for religious studies.
