Young Eden Park resident brings warmth to those in need

When Casey van Rensburg saw the need in her community, she didn't just stand by—she took an action.

In a world where kindness often takes a back seat, one young woman from Eden Park is proving that small acts of generosity can have a lasting impact.

Casey van Rensburg (17), a passionate community-driven youth, recently organised a clothing drive to help those in need – an initiative that has not only touched lives but has also strengthened the spirit of giving within her neighbourhood.

Van Rensburg’s journey into community work began with a simple realisation: many people in her area lack basic necessities.

After hosting her first clothing drive on Youth Day last year, she saw first-hand the gratitude of those receiving donations and knew she had to do more.

“I fell in love with working within my community,” she says. “That first event showed me just how many people are in need, so I decided to plan another one.”

But this wasn’t her first time giving back.

Over the past year, van Rensburg has dedicated herself to various acts of kindness, from handing out hot coffee and tea to the elderly at her local clinic to assisting daycare teachers with learners’ homework.

Her efforts even extended to Eden Park’s netball team, where she surprised the players with homemade cupcakes and cold juice on Women’s Day.

To ensure the success of her latest clothing drive, Van Rensburg leveraged social media and word of mouth, urging her community to donate.

While collecting donations proved challenging, especially since some came from distant locations, her determination and teamwork made it possible.

The event itself was met with overwhelming appreciation.

“One woman came to me in tears, thanking me over and over because her children desperately needed school shoes,” Van Rensburg recalls. “It was heart-warming.”

Encouraged by the positive response, she plans to continue her mission of kindness.

Inspired by the words of Kevin Heath: “Wherever there is a human in need, there is an opportunity for kindness to make a difference”, she is now working on collecting food parcels for the elderly and hopes to expand her efforts to other communities in the future.

For those who would like to support van Rensburg’s initiative, donations are welcome.

In Casey’s own words, “There is always an opportunity to help. You just have to open your eyes wide enough to see it.”
