Alberton Football Club mourns the passing of veteran coach Mike Kenning
Mike Kenning, the respected coach who shaped the lives of countless players at Alberton Football Club for over two decades, has passed away at 84.
Mike Kenning, a beloved figure in Alberton’s football community, passed away peacefully on March 26 at 84.
The former professional footballer and long-serving coach of Alberton Football Club died of natural causes, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and mentorship in the sport.
Kenning, originally from Birmingham, England, had a distinguished playing career, including stints at Wolverhampton Wanderers, Shrewsbury Town, and Aston Villa, before moving to South Africa.
It was in the southern hemisphere, however, where he left his mark. After retiring as a player, Kenning turned to coaching, becoming a pivotal figure at Alberton Football Club, where he served as head coach for over two decades.
His contributions to the local football scene went beyond the pitch.
Kenning’s unwavering commitment to developing young talent and nurturing a strong team spirit earned him the respect and admiration of players and supporters.
His influence extended beyond the team, as he became a mentor and friend of many in the community.
Kenning’s funeral was at the Alberton Methodist Church on March 26, where friends, family, and former players gathered to pay their respects.
Tributes poured in from all corners of the football world, with many remembering his wisdom, warmth, and passion for the game.
“Mike was more than a coach to us; he was a father figure, a guide, and a friend. He taught us life lessons, not just football skills,” coach Xolani Moshuge said.
Kenning leaves behind his wife, two sons, three grandsons, and two granddaughters.
