Mini council, Alberton Lions Club spread Easter cheer

The Alberton Lions Club spread Easter joy with nearly 4 000 donated eggs.

For the Alberton Lions Club, Easter is not just about chocolate eggs – it’s about compassion, community and connection.

The Johannesburg Mini Council recently donated Easter eggs to the club, helping it bring smiles to children and adults across Alberton and the south of Johannesburg.

Since 2018, except for 2020, when Covid-19 paused the tradition, these annual donations have become a cherished part of the club’s outreach.

This year, the generosity was larger than ever. The Alberton Lions are grateful for the 3 996 Easter eggs received from the Johannesburg Mini Council.

“This annual donation makes such a difference. The smiles these eggs will bring to our beneficiaries are priceless. Thank you, that together, we can bless others,” said Sandy King of the Alberton Lions Club.

Lions Club members personally distribute the eggs to a range of beneficiaries, including police stations, crèches, Ligstad, Amcare, Stepping Stone, LOTS, Karina Place and Northam Place (old age homes), Lighthouse, a stimulation and accommodation facility for the disabled, the Alberton Tuiste vir Bejaardes, the Alberton Retirement Village, the JOL Children’s Home, the local fire station and the Society for the Blind.

At some crèches and care centres, the club hosts Easter parties to make the day special for the children.

“This donation from the Johannesburg Mini Council is a huge help for us in reaching out to all our beneficiaries where we normally wouldn’t have the funds to do so, bringing joy and love to those who receive them,” said King.
Beyond Easter, the Lions’ spirit of service is ongoing.

Their Christmas in July initiative treats 150 primary school children in Katlehong and Thokoza to a fun-filled Saturday of food, games and entertainment near Mandela Day.

New moms at South Rand Hospital get support with “mommy care bags” containing baby clothes, toiletries and blankets.

The club also regularly acknowledges and thanks those who serve the Alberton community, including the police, the fire department, the SPCA and the Amcare staff.

Adding to their calendar of giving, the Alberton Lions hosted an 18-hole golf day at the Reading Country Club on March 28 in support of their hunger relief projects.

Blessed with clear skies, 64 players participated.

“A huge thank you to our players, company sponsors and private individuals who contributed prizes, advertising and donations,” King adds.

“Our incredible volunteers ran the shooter’s holes, and the prize giving was a fun affair with raffles, auctions and great music from a fantastic DJ and entertainer. It truly was a day of community and camaraderie.”

The Alberton Lions continue to live their motto with passion: We serve.

And as King proudly puts it, “The Lions work hard, but play hard as well. Strength in oneness!”
