Alberton lions club raise funds to fight hunger in Alberton and surrounding areas
The Alberton Lions Club hosted its annual fundraising golf day at the Reading Country Club in aid of their hunger relief projects.
A total of R40 000 was raised on the day. Every year, for a three-month period, the club do food hampers that have 21 items inside to donate to families in need.
The club has a food collection at Pick n Pay in Brackenhurst where they collect food every month and give back to the people. Jim Wilson a member of the club, explained: “The food comes from the public and it all goes back to the public. We make sure that everything we collect goes back into the community.”
During the price giving the club received donations from companies, individuals, and the 64 plays that contributed R2 500 per four-ball. Wilson emphasised that the most significant moment was the entertainer who took over the auctions during prize-giving.
The club auctioned a painting from one of their lion’s sons and it was auctioned three times and raised an amount of R5 000.
“The are so many people that are pensioners and they can’t live on that Sassa amount. Relieving hunger is a priority to everyone and that’s why we are helping them,” Wilson expressed.
