Firefighters contain Alrode North factory blaze

Thick black smoke rose from burning truck tyres as crews rushed to stop flames from spreading to a nearby building yesterday.

A factory fire broke out in Alrode North on Sunday afternoon, sending thick black smoke billowing into the sky.

According to William Ntladi, spokesperson for the City of Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS), the alarm was raised at exactly 15:15.

“Primary responding crews from Thokoza Fire Station arrived at 34 Barium Road with six firefighters. Backup was immediately activated from Alberton and Palm Ridge fire stations,” said Ntladi.

On arrival, crews found truck tyres burning inside a dysfunctional transport logistics company, with flames spreading rapidly to a nearby building.

“Due to the high velocity of the fire, the building became the first priority before the burning tyres. The fire was just a few metres from the structure,” explained Ntladi.

Firefighters managed to contain the blaze using a hydrant located just outside the perimeter fence, which provided strong water pressure.

No casualties were reported, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
