ER24 Tips for Flash Flood Safety
Flash floods can develop rapidly and without warning, particularly in low-lying areas. ER24 urges residents to be prepared and follow these safety tips:
At Home:
- Keep emergency numbers and important information handy.
- Prepare emergency supplies, including water, canned food, a can opener, a battery-operated radio, a flashlight, and protective clothing.
- Maintain a first aid kit.
- Turn off all household electrical devices.
- Lock doors and windows.
- Evacuate early and move to higher ground if flooding is imminent.
If Outdoors or in a Vehicle:
- Move to higher ground immediately.
- Avoid walking through floodwaters; even 15cm of moving water can sweep you off your feet.
- If your vehicle is surrounded by rising water, abandon it and seek higher ground.
- Never drive through flooded roads; the road could be washed away.
- If swept away, grab onto any object that may help you stay afloat.
- In vehicles, roll down windows and open doors to equalise pressure and escape safely.
By following these precautions, residents can protect themselves and their property during sudden flash floods.
