Smart ID application process now fully digitised in South Africa
Minister Dr Leon Schreiber leads digital ID initiative.
South Africans can now apply for Smart IDs fully digitally at participating bank branches, making Home Affairs services faster and easier to access.
The digitised process eliminates paperwork and long queues, offering a fast, secure, and complete digital experience.
The initiative, led by Minister of Home Affairs Dr Leon Schreiber, introduced the Digital Partnership Model.
Under this model, various branches of Capitec Bank and Standard Bank can now be used for citizens to apply for Smart IDs digitally.
Smart ID applications in South Africa are now available at select Capitec and Standard Bank branches, with FNB in final testing through a new, fast-tracked digital partnership.
The paperless process allows for walk-in applications at participating branches, with 17 locations live as of March 2026.
Process and how to apply:
• Locate a Branch: Visit one of the designated branches, such as Capitec or Standard Bank
• Application: The process is paperless, using in-branch self-service terminals or staff assistance.
• Requirements: You will need to take your existing ID document.
• Biometrics: Your fingerprints and photo will be taken on-site.
• Payment: The Smart ID costs R140.
• Collection: You will receive an SMS when your ID is ready to be collected at the same branch.
• Participating Banks: Capitec, Standard Bank, and FNB (selected branches).
• Booking: While some methods involve the eHomeAffairs website, new partnerships allow for walk-in service.
