Top Alberton learner seeks support for Dubai academic tour
Shaylee Koekemoer has earned a spot on an international academic tour but needs help to raise R59 990.
A hardworking learner from Alberton High School has been selected for a prestigious international academic tour, but needs community support to make her dream a reality.
Shaylee Koekemoer was invited to take part in the 11th Annual Academic Achievers Tour, organised by Travel and Sport, after being recognised for her strong academic performance.
The tour, set to take place in December 2026, will see top-performing learners from across South Africa travel abroad for educational experiences, including university visits, private lectures and cultural exploration.
Koekemoer has chosen the Dubai tour, which includes visits to leading universities, networking sessions with fellow academic achievers, and excursions to iconic destinations such as the Burj Khalifa and Ferrari World.
The total cost of the trip is R59 990.
Despite her excitement, the journey to securing her place has not been easy.
“I was extremely excited when I was selected, as I never imagined I would have the opportunity to travel overseas at such a young age,” said Koekemoer.
She added that she is particularly looking forward to exploring a new country, meeting new people and gaining insight into international education opportunities.
Koekemoer, who aspires to become a family law attorney and one day open her own law firm, said the experience could play an important role in shaping her future.
“I would have the opportunity to see what it is like in another country and possibly consider studying or working there one day. It could also open doors to bursaries or sponsorships,” she said.
Her mother, Belinda Volschenk, said she was both proud and concerned when she first heard the news.
“I was excited and proud, but I immediately thought it would not be possible due to our financial situation,” she said.
Volschenk, who is the sole provider in the household, explained that the family has faced ongoing financial challenges, including her husband’s unemployment since August 2024.
Despite this, they have been actively raising funds through various initiatives such as cake sales, food sales, raffles and small events.
“It has been challenging, because sometimes you need money to make money. But we remain hopeful and continue to put in the effort,” she said.
She added that community support has been encouraging.
“There are always people who show up for us, support our efforts and share our story. Every bit of support gives us hope that we will reach the right person who can help.”
For Volschenk, seeing her daughter board a plane for the first time would mean everything.
“I cannot wait to see the smile on her face. It would mean the world to know that, with the help of others, we made this dream come true for her.”
The family is appealing to the community for donations or sponsorships to help cover the cost of the tour.
