Greenfields Primary School hosted the Sarafina school competition, bringing together learners from neighbouring schools to celebrate talent, creativity and teamwork

Greenfields Primary School came alive with music, drama and celebration on June 16 as it hosted the Sarafina school competition in partnership with Raceview Motors Group, bringing together neighbouring schools for a day dedicated to youth empowerment, performing arts and education.

The event was supported by learners, teachers, parents, School Governing Body members and community stakeholders, all gathered to witness schools interpret the themes of the iconic Sarafina! production through energetic performances that honoured the courage and resilience of South Africa’s youth.

Participating schools included Greenfields Primary School, Palm Ridge Primary School and Shivirikani Primary School, with each team taking to the stage to impress the adjudicators through acting, choreography, storytelling and teamwork.

Opening the event, Greenfields Primary School principal Musa Bila welcomed guests and expressed appreciation to Raceview Motors for investing in the future of local learners.

“Our primary purpose in schools is to teach learners, and what you are doing is supporting a cause that is worth dying for. You are not just selling cars. You are supporting the education of an African child. By reaching out to our Greenfields community, you are planting a seed whose value is far greater than business. The same children that you are supporting today will one day become adults looking to buy vehicles. They will remember the name Raceview,” he said.

Buthelezi explained that while businesses naturally operate to make a profit, their involvement in education has a far greater impact on communities.

The principal also thanked parents for taking the time to attend the event, acknowledging their role in encouraging learners and supporting school activities.

The competition was judged by Muzi Buthelezi and Samukelwe Dlamini and Lefa Tlhame, chief adjudicator, who assessed performances across six categories, including teamwork, discipline and the most creative interpretation of the Sarafina theme.

Each category was scored out of 10 points, with the combined scores determining the overall winners.
After a closely contested competition, Greenfields Primary School was crowned the overall champion and awarded R8 000 for its outstanding performance.

Palm Ridge Primary School earned R5 000 in prize money, while its principal, Sinthamalr Pillay, received R2 000 after participating in a special game organised exclusively for principals during the event.

Last year, the winning school, Palm Ridge Primary School, received R10 000; Greenfields, R5 000; and Stone Ridge, R3 000. This year, we are proud to continue supporting our schools through this competition.

We sponsor schools because many of them are struggling and need support. We believe every child deserves an opportunity to showcase their talent, and through partnerships like this, we hope to make a positive difference in our communities,” said Vincent Kekana, sales manager from Raceview.

Beyond the prize money, the event highlighted the importance of arts education in building confidence, creativity and teamwork among learners.

It also demonstrated the value of collaboration between schools and local businesses, with Raceview Motors’ sponsorship helping to make the competition possible and providing opportunities that many schools would struggle to offer on their own.

The celebrations concluded with applause from parents and educators as learners proudly accepted their awards, marking another successful collaboration between Greenfields Primary School and Raceview Motors to promote education, culture, and youth development.

The Raceview Motors Group plans to host another event at Palm Ridge Primary School on September 24 for Heritage Day.
