Eden Park Senior Secondary School celebrates 2026 matric learners

The school’s valediction ceremony honoured the learners’ achievements with messages of hope and encouragement, alongside a moving tribute to a learner who passed away before completing Grade 12.

Eden Park Senior Secondary School celebrated its 2026 matric learners at its valediction ceremony, bringing together parents, teachers and learners for a day of reflection, encouragement and recognition.

The proceedings began with a guard of honour at the school before moving to Covenant Christian Church, where the formal event took place.

A message of hope

One of the highlights was an address by Dr Carolyn Grace, who travelled to South Africa specifically to attend the occasion.

She encouraged the learners to recognise the sacrifices and support of those who had helped them reach this milestone.

“You didn’t arrive at this moment alone. Someone sacrificed, someone believed in you when you were struggling to believe in yourself, someone saw potential in you before you recognised it, and today your presence is evidence that there was an investment and that investment was not in vain,” said Grace.

Grace challenged the learners to think beyond their school years and consider the people they wanted to become and the difference they hoped to make in the world. She also warned them against allowing their current circumstances to determine their future, encouraging them to see their potential beyond the challenges they might face.

Former Eden Park learner Elston John, who holds a master’s qualification in LLB, also addressed the learners, sharing an encouraging message about overcoming the limitations associated with one’s background.

He reminded them that growing up in a community with limited opportunities should not discourage them from pursuing their ambitions.

John encouraged the learners to understand that their starting point was not their entire story.

He emphasised that they did not exist in a vacuum and, just as life was not static, they had the ability to grow and change.

His message reinforced the importance of looking beyond present circumstances and remaining open to the opportunities that lie ahead.

A moment of remembrance

While the ceremony celebrated the learners’ achievements and the beginning of a new chapter, it also made space for a deeply emotional moment.

Gail Lanco, whose son, Tatum Lanco, passed away before completing his Grade 12 journey, was invited to receive his school-leaving certificate and matric jacket on his behalf.
