Horse racing on sand at its best

The race is a spectacular day out for the entire family.

Save the date of SaturdaySeptember 28 to your calendars because the annual premier horse race, The Emerald Cup, takes place at the Vaal Racecourse. Into its ninth year, this feature race carries prize money totaling R600 000 and is Africa’s richest horse race on sand.

The day will consist of a full race schedule including several feature races of which the Emerald Cup is the highlight.

This Grade II race is run over a distance of 1 450m on the Vaal sand track situated close to the banks of the Vaal River. Previous victors Meadow Magic, The Mouseketeer, Iron Curtain and Phunyuka are all etched on the honours roll.

Emerald Cup 2012 saw trainer Mike de Kock gets his second Emerald Cup victory as Meadow Magic, ridden by Anton Marcus beat Beacon Flare by a neck. De Kock’s previous win was in 2005 with Hilti. Can he take his win tally to three this year?

The race is a spectacular day out for the entire family. Entertainment for all ages takes place at the Vaal Racetrack boasting horse racing, live music and activities for the little ones. Braai facilities right next to the racetrack takes viewing to the next level while thoroughbreds thunder down the track.

Emerald Resort and Casino CEO Martin Rice said:, “Not only is The Emerald Cup one of our premier events during the year, it has grown into one of South Africa’s most anticipated horse racing events on the calendar which traditionally attracts strong competitors.

It is also a great opportunity to showcase the local Vaal and Sedibeng municipality and enhance the flow of local tourism to the Vaal region.”

The barrier Draw for the Emerald Cup will take place on Wednesday September 18.
