Local bowling club hosts their annual memorial tournament
To honour the late Mary Jones, the Alberton Bowling Club hosted the Mary Jones Memorial Tournament prize-giving.
The Alberton Bowling Club hosted the Mary Jones Memorial Tournament to honour the late Mary Jones on March 3.
Mary Jones, a former member of the Alberton Bowling Club, died in 2001.
The Mary Jones Memorial Tournament was created by her son, Maurice Jones, to sponsor and organise a tournament in her memory.
The club’s honorary secretary, Maria de Sousa, said that annually in February, paired-up players compete in the tournament over five Fridays.
Maurice relocated to the UK in 2001, shortly after his mother’s death, and has visited South Africa every February for the finals and prize-giving.
This year’s tournament was won by Sheila Smith and Beata Coetzer, who also both won the event last year.
“The Alberton Bowling Club is thankful to Maurice Jones because the tournament brings in much-needed revenue,” De Sousa concluded.
