ECD Sports Wednesday continues to promote sports and wellness in Katlehong

Katlehong Educare Centers held its 2024 Early Childhood Development Sports Wednesday.

Six schools gathered at Ebubeleni School for the physically challenged for Early Childhood and Development Sports Wednesday on March 19.

Little Angels Nursery School, Abinala Primary School, Mpumelelo Phambili Day Care, Zimele Primary School, Zimeleni LSEN School, and Ezibeleni LSEN School were the only schools that had the honour to be invited by the Gauteng Department of Education to attend the ECD Sports Wednesday.

Among the learners, teachers, and parents, the event saw senior members from the Department of Education join the fun.

The event was blessed by the presence of the Human Rights Committee who are one of the sponsors of this initiative.

Learners played a lot of activities including hopscotch hula hoop, sack racing, and motor coordination activities in their sports outfits.

“Learners had fun and a special thank you goes out to the hosting school Ezibeleni and the Department of Education,” said Celeste Pereira, the founder and principal of Little Angels Nursery School.

According to Phumelele Thlobatla, the ECD director, sports and wellness play a vital role in developing a child’s social skills and it helps develop the child’s physical potential. Most children don’t get time to play at home. This programme allows them to be themselves, he added.

After all the exhaustion the learners got from playing the activities, they were awarded certificates for their participation.

ECD Sports and Wellness is an inclusive programme that allows both general and disabled learners to learn through playing.

According to Celeste, the focus was to add sports to the early childhood curriculum, ensuring that learning takes place in children’s play.
