Ligbron, Marais Viljoen share the spoils in action-packed day

Marais Viljoen and Ligbron clashed in a thrilling rugby showdown on May 24, with both schools securing key wins in a day full of action.

The rugby fields at Hoërskool Marais Viljoen were abuzz with action and intensity when they hosted Ligbron Akademie for a day of rugby matches across various age groups and divisions on May 24.

While Ligbron opened the day with a string of strong performances, the tide turned in the latter half when Marais Viljoen mounted a comeback to claim several key wins.

The day began at 08:00 with the U14A teams.

Ligbron showed early dominance, capitalising on quick passes and structured play.

Marais Viljoen held their own but ultimately fell short. After an hour of play, the match ended at 09:00, with Ligbron securing a 29–17 victory.

At 09:00, the U15A teams took the field in what became one of the most heated matches of the day.

Ligbron scored the first try at the 18-minute mark to go 5–0 up and had built a strong lead of 21–7 by the 25-minute halftime mark.

The second half saw tensions rise, culminating in a fight between players. A yellow card was handed to Marais Viljoen just minutes before full-time.

Despite a determined effort, they lost 28–14.

The U16A match began at 10:00 and ran until 11:20.

Ligbron again started strongly, racking up 14 points in the first 23 minutes.

In the second half, Ligbron stretched their lead to 28, but Marais Viljoen rallied with two more tries—one at the 19-minute mark and another just before the final whistle.

The game ended 38–15 in Ligbron’s favour.

However, momentum shifted from 11:20 with the second U16A fixture.

Marais Viljoen found their rhythm, taking control of the match and showing defensive grit and attacking creativity.

They triumphed over Ligbron with a 23–16 victory.

In the final clash of the day, the first teams went head-to-head in a highly anticipated match that delivered on all fronts.

Marais Viljoen came out firing and maintained their composure throughout.

In a fast-paced, end-to-end battle, the home side outclassed their opponents to clinch a 36–27 win, bringing the crowd to their feet.

Earlier in the day, Marais Viljoen also celebrated victories in several other fixtures, including the U14B, U15B, U16B, and third teams, showing the depth and strength of the school’s rugby programme.

Despite Ligbron’s early dominance, Marais Viljoen’s comeback in the later fixtures highlighted the teams’ resilience and determination.

With both schools walking away with wins, the day ended in mutual respect and provided thrilling rugby for all in attendance.
