A promising young rugby player from Alberton North is preparing for the opportunity of a lifetime after being selected to represent the Warriors Rugby Club on an international rugby tour to Italy later this year.

Seventeen-year-old Gucci Sithole, a matric learner at Hoërskool Dinamika, recently earned his place on the tour after delivering outstanding performances during a high school rugby tournament hosted at Hoërskool Dr Malan in Meyerton.

The talented sportsman was identified by BR Sport International, an organisation known for creating international sporting opportunities for young athletes.

His selection comes as recognition for his dedication, discipline and passion for rugby, which has become a major part of his life over the years.

Gucci’s mother, Lorraine Sithole, said that the family is incredibly proud of his achievement and excited about the doors this opportunity could open for his future in the sport.

“As a mother, I am extremely proud of Gucci. Rugby is something he truly loves and he puts his whole heart into it every time he steps onto the field. Seeing him being recognised internationally is emotional and rewarding for our family,” she said.

Lorraine explained that Gucci had also been selected for a rugby tour to Thailand, but after careful consideration, he decided to pursue the Italy tour instead because of the exposure and development opportunities it could offer.

“He believes Italy will give him greater exposure, especially when it comes to connections with South African rugby structures and international experience. This is a dream come true for him,” she added.

The total costs of the tour are R69 990. It includes 10 days and a seven-night visit.

According to his family, Gucci has always shown determination both on and off the rugby field.

Balancing the pressures of matric with his commitment to training and tournaments has required dedication and sacrifice, but his love for the sport continues to motivate him.

Friends, teachers and fellow learners at Hoërskool Dinamika have also rallied behind the young athlete as he prepares for the exciting journey ahead.

The Italy tour is expected to provide players with valuable international experience, exposure to different playing styles and an opportunity to grow both personally and professionally through sport.

The talented rugby youngster said that it represents not only a chance to showcase his talent abroad, but also an opportunity to pursue his dream of building a future in rugby.

However, the family is now appealing to the community, local businesses, and potential sponsors to help make the trip possible, as the costs associated with international travel, accommodation, and participation remain significant.

Lorraine said that any contribution, no matter how small, would make a meaningful difference in helping her son achieve his dream.

“We are asking the community to please support Gucci in any way possible. He has worked very hard for this opportunity and we would appreciate any assistance to help make this journey a reality,” she said.
