Temba Bavuma Foundation marks decade with Future Founders Challenge launch

With the recent launch of the Future Founders Challenge at St David’s Marist Inanda Alexandra Campus, Temba Bavuma’s foundation seeks to open doors for the next generation of entrepreneurs.

The Temba Bavuma Foundation marked its 10th anniversary on June 19 at St David’s Marist Inanda Alexandra Campus with the launch of the Future Founders Challenge: Soap-to-Startup – Build a Business in a Box.

This initiative introduces learners to entrepreneurship and financial literacy, encouraging them to design innovative business concepts while building practical skills for the future.

Speaking to the media after the launch, cricket star Bavuma reflected on the organisation’s journey, highlighting how impactful it has been over the years.

“I think what started as a vision has become a reality. Through those 10 years, we have had beautiful success stories that have come through the foundation.”

He added that the foundation has always been anchored on three pillars: education, sports, and social impact.

“From an educational point of view, individuals who came through our programme have gone on to make it within the corporate space,” he said, adding that these individuals are lawyers and accountants.

“From a sports point of view, we have got individuals who went on to become professionals, who have represented South Africa at a developmental level,” Bavuma explained.

On the social front, initiatives such as clothing drives and feeding schemes have touched thousands of lives, reinforcing the foundation’s commitment to community upliftment.

Explaining why education and sports remain central to the foundation’s mission, Bavuma drew on his own upbringing.

Growing up in Kwalanga, he saw peers with equal or greater talent who lacked access to scholarships and structured opportunities. His foundation, he explained, seeks to replicate the interventions that shaped his own journey, ensuring that more young people can reach their potential.

“I look at the guys that I grew up with in Kwalanga, guys who are as talented as I was, if not better. But I was the fortunate one in that I got the scholarships. I was brought up in a system that allowed me to fulfil my potential.”

The event also marked the official launch of a partnership between the foundation and St David’s Marist Inanda Alexandra Campus. This collaboration aims to expand access to quality education and create meaningful opportunities for learners from disadvantaged communities. Bavuma emphasised that partnerships have been instrumental in the foundation’s growth.

Looking ahead, Bavuma expressed his desire to extend the foundation’s impact for another five to 10 years. Their mission remains rooted in opportunity, ensuring that talented young people can access the systems and support they need to thrive.
