Sports company donates soccer boots

ALEXANDRA - A sports company launches a project that encourages football as a career.

More than 100 young footballers were over the moon as they received new soccer boots.

This was courtesy of 1Child, 1Soccer boot, a project that aims to encourage soccer as a career.

DRMAB Sports launched the project at the 3rd Square Grounds with sponsorships from The Sports Trust and ABI Coca-Cola, Bedfordview. Director of DRMAB Sports, Doctor Mabena decided for his birthday he wanted to give rather than receive. “Most of these children’s parents cannot afford soccer boots,” Mabena said.

Mabena said he was inspired by his 10-year-old son who wanted to donate soccer boots to a boy who did not have any. “If a 10-year-old can think of doing something so incredible, so can I,” said Mabena.

The initiative was also a way for Mabena to challenge other companies to invest in the youth and to keep them off drugs.

Nompi Nhlapo, chairperson of the portfolio committee for sports, recreation, arts and culture in the Gauteng Legislature said she supported the initiative. “I like that DRMAB Sports went out to look for sponsors instead of sitting and hoping that government would finance them because budgets are very tight,” Nhlapo said.

The project will soon go national.
