Community members fed up with crime

ALEXANDRA - The community refused to be terrorised and came up with ways to minimise crime.

The community of Ward 105 was fed up with the increasing crime in the area and held a meeting to discuss ways to minimise criminal activities.

Community leader, Bongi Mmako said residents were scared and they needed to come up with a plan to stop criminals. “People are being terrorised in their homes and they need to feel safe,” said Mmako.

The ward did have patrol teams and they planned to tighten up security. They would buy specific type of whistles which could be used when anyone was in danger. Mmako said some parents knew their children were criminals. He appealed to them to discipline their children. He said, “Time is up. We will be coming very hard down on them.”

He said two cars were recently stolen and one was recovered. A culprit was beaten up by the community and handed over to the police. Mmako said the community was not declaring war against people, but against crime.
