Foot the bill, Extension 10 gogo is told
ALEXANDRA - The house that was smashed by a car in extension 10 has still not been rebuild by the City of Johannesburg.
Gogo, Nomgqibelo Mkhwanazi has been waiting for more than two months for her house to be rebuilt after a car smashed into it.
The 80-year-old granny, who miraculously survived being crushed to death by falling debris during the incident, had been told that the housing department would demolish the house and reconstruct it amid fears that the structure was not stable.
Alex News has been sent from pillar to post in its quest to ascertain why the process was taking so long. Councillor, Joyce Ngwenya of Ward 105 said she had handed over all the aspects of the rebuilding to the city council’s housing department.
This after Ngwenya had thwarted an offer by the owner of the vehicle that caused the damage, Lombardy West resident, Nqobile Hlabangane, to repair the house. He had already delivered the bricks for the repairs. Ngwenya said at the time that the house was insured and reconstruction costs would have to be claimed from the RDP insurance fund.
When contacted, Simon Moloko of the housing department in Region E referred Alex News to the Alexandra Renewal project, saying they were responsible for the matter. Acting project director, Neels Letter said they were not responsible for the rebuilding of the house since it had been allocated to the beneficiary.
“The house has been passed on to the beneficiary and as a result it is out of our hands and we cannot foot the bill for rebuilding. The beneficiary has to,” Letter said.
Mkhwanazi’s son-in-law, Simon Mahlati said they were promised that the house would be rebuilt, but nothing had been done so far. He felt that it was not right that the process was taking so long.
Mkhwanazi was allocated another house to live in while her house was supposedly been reconstructed.
