The community of Setwetla protested at a handover ceremony of 69 shacks by government officials.
The angry community members believed the allocation process of the shacks by government was flawed. According to one of the protesters who did not want to be named, the shacks were built for Setwetla residents “but the government is allocating people outside of Setwetla”.
He said, “The community is angry because only five people from Setwetla have been allocated yet there are 69 shacks.” Protesters said the shacks were built by Gift of the Givers, and alleged that government had just stepped in to allocate to people outside of Setwetla.
Gauteng MEC of Local Government and Housing, Ntombi Mekgwe said less than 20 people from Setwetla qualified for the shacks as there were criteria to be met. “People who did not have South African citizenship or have houses elsewhere did not qualify,” she added.
Founder of Gift of the Givers, Dr Imtiaz Sooliman said, “There is a lot of issues regarding the allocation of the shacks. There is a new list and new people will be allocated.”
