Alex girl cycles for charity

ALEXANDRA - University of Johannesburg's metallurgy engineering student and Alex resident Lebohang Mashabane will cycle the Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge to raise funds for the needy.

Alexandra’s Lebohang Mashabane will take part in the Momentum 94.7km Cycle Challenge on 17 November in an effort to make a difference in her community.

Mashabane will ride for Afrika Tikkun and hopes to raise funds to feed 50 families in her community. Afrika Tikkun is an organisation

aimed at improving the lives of township children.

She said, “I am quite nervous because this is the longest race I have ever been a part of. It is going to help my community and other people who do not have food.”

Mashabane only started cycling last year and believes that her participation will improve the lives of the needy.

“People are faced with many challenges and food is one of them,” she said. “People need food to survive and I’m hoping that this will assist those who are suffering.”

Although she is quite new to cycling, the 19-year-old was chosen to participate in a triathlon competition in Germany this year. She said the experience was an eye-opener.

“It was awesome and it was my first time outside Africa. It was great seeing how people from other countries survive.”

Mashabane is a first year Metallurgy Engineering student at the University of Johannesburg and said she would like to become a professional cyclist one day.

“I have tried so many other sports but I wasn’t good at them. I then tried cycling and decided to give it a chance. The people who trained me were very good and patient with me.”

She said she was grateful to Africa Tikkum for giving her a chance because she had stayed away from drugs and other negative things that happen in her community.
