Football club no fan of these visitors
ALEXANDRA - The Alexandra Northrand Local Football Association is up in arms against a decision to house the families of the Madala Hostel at the stadium.
Chairman of the Alexandra Northrand Local Football Association, Maisha Molepo claims they were never consulted when homeless families were given temporary shelter at the stadium.
The families were offered the shelter after their hostel was gutted by fire. They stayed for about two months and the association said this was an inconvenience. “There were men, women and children living here,” said Molepo. “They occupied the boardroom and the change rooms. We found them when we got to work one morning and no one consulted with us before they were moved.”
Molepo said they were told that the stadium was a community facility and that the people had a right to be there. “We had never seen such a thing happening and we don’t want it to happen again. It was an inconvenience because we couldn’t have our everyday training and workshops. We couldn’t use the change rooms and there was a lot of noise and the place was dirty,” Molepo said.
City of Johannesburg’s Region E sports and recreation manager, Elsie Mokgoebo said the stadium was a council facility. The hostel was burnt down and those people had nowhere to go. We have the right to move them and I was following instructions from my department,” she said.
