Alex club to play in the elite Sasol League

ALEXANDRA - United Ladies Football Club has set its sights on playing in the elite Sasol league next year.

Alexandra’s United Ladies Football Club will play in the elite Sasol Women’s Provincial League in the coming season.

The coaching, technical staff and players were delighted that the club had met its objectives. Team coach Malvin Trynos Khumalo said, “We are obviously very happy to have achieved our objective to qualify for the Sasol league in 2014.”

United Ladies qualified following regional play-offs held at the Tshwane University of Technology in Pretoria, where the team conquered everyone before them. In their opening match against Early Bird ladies from Westrand, United won 2-1 and followed that with a 4-0 drubbing of the Tshwane side, Pull Together.

United next took on Ekurhuleni’s Etwata Ladies who they hammered 4-0 and later put two goals past Celta Vigo. The Alex outfit won all their four games and scored 13 goals, conceding only one. United’s star striker and Banyana Banyana player Zingawe Phakathi scored seven of them making her the leading goal scorer.

United Ladies will replace another Alex outfit, Alex ladies, which was relegated from the Sasol league in 2012. Asked about his plans to reinforce the team for their debut in the tough league, Khumalo said he was confident his current squad could weather the storm.

“I will search for a few experienced players just to bolster the squad but I will keep the core of current players,” he said. “Zingawe is definitely staying with us and this will give us tremendous firepower upfront. I am sure on her day, she will definitely give defenders from other teams a run for their money.”

Khumalo thanked Safa Johannesburg Region and the local Alex football fraternity for all the support given to them throughout their journey to the Sasol league. “We shall continue to make Alex and the Joburg Region proud,” he said.
