Community library overburdened

ALEXANDRA - Library in Alexandra struggles with demand for service from the public.

The Sankopano Community Library at the centre is feeling the burden of increased membership since the closure of the main library on 8th Avenue for renovations.

Management of the library, which is a joint partnership between Alex San Kopano Trust and the City of Joburg, is unsure of when the main library will reopen.

Librarian Prince Mafora said their facility attracts approximately 320 people every day, except Sunday when they are closed.

“Our clients are mostly pupils and students from 13 primary schools, five secondary schools, and local university students residing in Alex, as well as local book lovers,” he said.

“We stock school and university supplementary books, novels, nature publications, encyclopaedias and journals. Due to our proximity to most schools students prefer to come here rather than go to the main library.

“In addition, the users are also attracted by the computer lab and internet facility. Many graduates and well-placed people from Alexandra have improved their status in life as a result of support received from the library.”

In addition to its extensive use, the library also has challenges including a shortage of new books.

“This is mainly due to delay in delivery by our suppliers. We also experience overcrowding, particularly in December just before the examinations. Also when we are short staffed some of our clients tear out pages or steal books – even when our electronic security system is functioning,” he said.
