City council to engage with public

ALEXANDRA - The City of Johannesburg's Region E will be in full force this month in a face to face engagement with the Alexandra community.

The engagement will be an open day and all community members are invited from 8am to 3pm at No. 3 Square, Alexandra on 7 March, followed by another on 14 March at the same time at Norwood Mall.

Briefing the media at Sankopano Centre, operations manager for the city council, Willy Lekoloane, said the occasion is to market the city council’s various programmes and services to the public and provide the public with a platform to inform the council on their concerns.

“Also, it will be an opportunity for the public sector to stimulate public/private partnerships. Both local and national government spheres can’t fully attend to the challenges of transformation and development alone.”

According to Lekoloane, companies like Absa, Nedbank, Eskom, Vodacom, ABI, South African Breweries, Alex TV and Power FM will display their products and services, alongside those of the council’s units such as Pikitup and Joburg Water.

“National departments will also be present such as trade and industry, which will advise the public on business opportunities. Basic education will be displaying its services jointly with the [city] council’s human resources departments for convenient dissemination of advice on access to the [city] council’s different bursary schemes,” Lekoloane said.

He added that Alex Health Centre nurses will test for diabetes, hypertension and cholesterol, conduct pap smears for cervical cancer, and give advice on head injury cases.

The South African Social Security Agency will also advise on any changes to the various social grants and to deal with challenges faced by communities in accessing them.
