A pick and sword wielding man who beat up police officers for “interfering in his domestic dispute with his girlfriend” has been arrested.
Alex police spokesperson Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela said the man will appear in the Alexandra Magistrates Court soon to face a charge of assault. He said two police officers who were patrolling in the Eastbank area of Alexandra were approached by a woman who demanded they accompany her to fetch her child from her boyfriend.
The officers duly complied and when asked the boyfriend to hand over the child to the mother, he refused and told the officers “you are not the fathers of this child and so bugger-off”. As the officers tried to reason with him, an argument ensued and the boyfriend became violent.
The man is said to have tried to run away with the child but was blocked by the officers. He then went into the house and fetched a pick and sword and threatened to stab the officers for “interfering in his domestic dispute with his girlfriend”.
Armed with the pick and sword, the man suddenly turned berserk and swore at the officers and threatened to kill them. “He lashed at them with the sword and the officers then grabbed him and a struggle ensued.
He was eventually overpowered by the officers and arrested. None of the officers were hurt in the struggle,” Maphakela concluded.
