Civic and development organisations in Region E will be jointly accountable for the 2014/15 integrated development plans with the City of Joburg.
Representatives of the organisations contributed to the plans at a community outreach summit held at the Alexandra branch of the Central Johannesburg College.
They reviewed with city officials, ward based challenges identified in previous community cluster meetings and suggested solutions for inclusion in the plans. The challenges include building controls and contraventions, housing demand, enforcement of bylaws on overcrowding, illegal land use and lack of pro-active responses to service delivery demands among others.
These challenges would be attended to by a series of projects which were identified by city officials Tiisetso Mphenyeke and Andrea McGahey. They include five food gardens which will create jobs and provide food security while countering illegal dumping, creation of regional anti-invasion units, and construction of a rubble transfer station to counteract illegal settlements and dumping, upgrading of Jukskei Park and upgrading of the electrical system at Helen Joseph women’s hostel among others.
Integrated development plans are formulated every five years with public participation, and are reviewed annually to adjust and include new priorities.
