Faulty traffic lights are a disaster waiting to happen

ALEXANDRA - Malfunctioning robots on a busy Marlboro road have not been repaired for months posing risk for accidents if not repaired urgently.

Faulty traffic lights on Marlboro Road have not been repaired for months, causing traffic confusion and the risk of accidents.

The traffic lights on the intersection of Marlboro and Eastbank drives have not been working properly for three months. They were reported to the Joburg Roads Agency and council officials, and despite promises for urgent repairs, nothing has been done.

The confusion is caused by the pavement traffic light on Eastbank Drive from Extension 7, and the overhead traffic light on Marlboro Drive going northwards, facing the same direction, but giving conflicting signals of stop and go simultaneously.

Motorist, Alter Karpes said this confuses motorists, causes road rage and will lead to accidents. Karpes reported the problem to the roads agency council official Chris De Bruin and the agency call centre also informed a local radio station. When asked by Alex News about the traffic lights, a call centre official confirmed the reference numbers of the reports and said they were passed on to the appropriate units for their attention.

The traffic lights at the nearby busy intersection on the corner of Eastbank Drive and Laduma Street in Extension 7 have also not been functioning for many months. Residents said numerous reports had been made to the roads agency, including to its officials passing by, but nothing has been done. They said accidents have been averted by the grace of God and by drivers exercising caution when approaching the intersection.
