Alexandra will be among the beneficiaries of a flagship project to build 10 state of the art, multipurpose sporting centres across the province over the next five years.
The project, Operation Mabaleng (playing fields) is a Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation initiative and was unveiled by the department’s MEC Molebatsi Bopape. Also in attendance was various Gauteng MMC’s for sport and Gauteng Sports Council president Barry Hendricks.
The suburb of Westbury will be the first to benefit from the project with others being Thembisa, Mamelodi, Bekkersdaal, Eldorado Park and Diepkloof in Soweto.
The aim of the project is to provide youth with sporting and recreational facilities.“Access to and participation in sport is a human right essential to human development and helps in the transformation of society,” Bopape said.
In some areas, existing facilities will be revamped while in others they will be developed from the ground. The centres will have facilities for soccer, 5-a-side soccer, mini rugby, cricket, netball, basketball, gymnastics, mini cricket, athletics and cycling.
Once completed, the facilities will be handed over to municipalities to run and manage, however the department and the municipalities will facilitate and co-ordinate programmes offered on site.
