Sadag to host Facebook chat highlighting teen suicide
JOBURG - To highlight Teen Suicide Prevention Week, the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (Sadag) will host a Facebook online chat with a suicide survivor and experts.
The online chat will see Daryl Brown, a suicide survivor, and psychologist Zamo Mbele discuss relevant issues.
Meryl da Costa, press liaison officer for Sadag, explained the significance of the prevention week which runs until 21 February.
“Teen Suicide Prevention Week is a campaign aimed at promoting and creating awareness around teen depression and suicide prevention,” she said.
Da Costa added that in honour of this campaign, the Facebook chat will also see Brown and psychiatrist Dr Helen Clark host a discussion on the warning signs and depressive symptoms, and how to talk to someone who is feeling suicidal and who to contact in times of need.
Additionally, Sadag will be visiting schools across the country, going class-to-class to educate teenagers and educators about identifying symptoms of depression in either themselves or their friends, as well as the warning signs of suicide.
The two Facebook chats will take place on 20 February, with the first taking place at 1pm, with Brown and Mbele, and the second one taking place at 7pm with Brown and Clark.
