Ward 91 councillor Andrew Stewart has submitted a petition he hopes will draw city council’s attention to the neglect of the Number 1 Square Sports Ground.
The submission made to the petitions committee calls on the city council to attend to the facility on 3rd Avenue which is next to Alex High School. Stewart said he had made presentations at several city council meetings regarding the upkeep of the facility, but nothing had been done.
Basins, sinks and taps had been stolen from the facility and it had been invaded by vagrants who use it for illicit activities such as using drugs.
“They [vagrants] have pulled down gates and broke padlocks to gain entry,” he said. A woman security guard was placed at the facility but she was fearful of the vagrants, said Stewart.
The petition calls for the appointment of two male security guards, the repairing of the building, money to be committed for the repairs, and a timeline for the work to be done.
