MEC commits more schools for autistic children

ALEXANDRA - The provincial department of education has committed to build more schools to accommodate children with autism.

The provincial department of education has committed to build more schools to accommodate children with autism.

This was said by MEC Panyaza Lesufi when the city turned the Joburg night skyline blue at the iconic Nelson Mandela Bridge on 2 April to mark World Autism Month. Similar commemorations were held globally at other iconic sites such as the pyramids in Egypt, and the Empire State Building and One World Trade Centre in New York, USA.

Autism is a neurological disorder that affects the functioning of the brain and is said to affect one in 99 children. It is characterised by impairments in social interaction, problems with verbal and non-verbal communication, and restricted or repetitive behaviour. It is said to stem from a genetic predisposition triggered by environmental factors.

With only two schools in the province catering for children with this disorder, Lesufi said resources, support and attention should be availed to them, and no child should be left out because of their challenges.

City council speaker Connie Bapela urged people to support those with autism. “We need to care for and support those who are differently-abled and must conscientise the rest of the city on the needs of people living with autism and how we can help them live more comfortable lives,” she said.

Speech therapist and mother to an autistic eight-year-old son, Sumaya Babamia said the world was an intimidating place for people with this disorder. “They have special needs and because of their speech impediments, they find it hard to communicate those needs. For parents of autistic children, this is a long and difficult road.”

The City will roll out an education campaign in all seven regions throughout April culminating in a fun race/walk on 3 May to raise funds for Autism South Africa.
