ALEXANDRA - Grade four and five and, six and seven pupils are bracing for this year’s Story Skirmish and Battle of the Books competition respectively.

Grade 4, 5, 6 and 7 pupils are bracing for this year’s Story Skirmish and Battle of the Books competitions.

The competitions, which tests the knowledge and learning capabilities of children, start in August and end in November and will be attended by 32 schools.

Alex will be represented by Bovet, Carter, Dr Knack, Gordon, Ikage, Iphutheng, Enkanyezi, Ithute, MC Weiler, Skeen and Sandtonview schools. Other participating schools from the same Joburg East District are Buchleuch, Wendwood, Lyndhurst, Glenhazel and Fairsand.

Melanie Burgin, senior librarian at Riverpark Library which is facilitating at the local level, said each school is represented by a team of eight. They were lent 15 books in March to prepare for the contest, which will include answering a set of questions in an open platform where they press a buzzer to outwit others in providing correct answers.

Those who are interested in knowing their children’s scholastic abilities are encouraged to attend the competition or to engage the schools. The library also encouraged parents to develop an interest in their children’s reading, as language is the only vehicle through which they can master any school subject.
