Alexandra High School has made it to the regional finals of The Sanlam Kay Motsepe Schools Cup, one of the biggest U19 schools tournament in Africa.
The tournament, now in its 11th edition, is again offering whopping prize money to the schools that succeed at provincial and national level.
Elias Sehlapelo, football coach at the school, was adamant that his team can make it through to the nationals, despite facing the challenge of not having their own facilities to prepare for matches.
“We do not have a ground to do our pre-match preparations and it’s a challenge because we do not get time together as a team. I won this tournament while I was in Limpopo and I know what is expected of us,” he said.
“I have talked to the boys and they will be more than ready. Our aim is to reach the final and hopefully win the tournament.”
Principal of the school, Zoleka Lebelo, was also full of praise for the team for making it to provincial level. “We are happy that we are moving up the ladder in school sports and developing pupils outside the classroom. We would like to thank the teachers who are taking the initiative to help the kids with their football careers.”
