MC Weiler Primary School stands a chance to win R45 000 from Danone

ALEXANDRA - MC Weiler Primary School stands a chance to win R45 000 in a national Nutriday Schools Competition Programme sponsored by Danone company.

MC Weiler Primary School stands a chance to win R45 000 in a national NutriDay Schools Competition Programme sponsored by Danone Southern Africa.

The competition, which is in its forth year, involves 1 500 national primary schools, and MC Weiler is one of seven schools in Alexandra that is participating. Mlondisi Zwane of HDI, a public relations company which facilitated the competition, said the competition was part of Danone’s involvement in the development of schools and the motivation of learning and an improvement to the curriculum.

He said the competition required children to develop models using Danone products and packaging materials, which would be adjudicated for creativity and craftsmanship relating to science, life skills, technology and environmental friendliness.

“The competition adds to Danone’s other focus of educational content and curriculum delivery, lesson planning, material use and the environment,” he said.

Some Danone executives arrived at the school to view the models and also sat in on some of the classroom activities. “This was for their experiential feel and understanding of the learning process and challenges and to inform their future improvement of the competition and school support programmes,” said Zwane.

Children’s models included scarecrows, bedrooms suites and fridges. Some of the children said making the models helped them to use their free time to ward off boredom while discovering their artistic talent and help them clean up the environment.

“It helped me discover my talent,” said pupil Gugu Mthiya.

Another pupil, Charmaine Mavuso said, “I am grateful for the opportunity which exposed me to my talent, and I hope the school wins the competition.”
