Many Alex residents abhor the wanton littering that is a health hazard and affects everyone’s human dignity.
The level of littering has been decried by councillor, Monde Mbingeleli of Ward 116, who attributed it to the public’s indifference.
“Sometimes, the littering is thrown off moving vehicles and taxis leaving roads filthy and entry gates blocked with trash,” said Mbingeleli. “Residents jump over the heaps as if unconcerned by the negative effects of the litter to their health.”
He said residents littered despite plastic bags having been issued to them. “The residents litter under the impression that it doesn’t affect them directly, but it does through rodents which multiply in their thousands, posing health hazards, causing filth, blocking drainage systems and creating an unbearable stench that affects their surroundings.
“When this happens, they shift responsibility from themselves to government.”
He added that this was despite city council’s environmental awareness programmes and the engagement of street cleaners.
The councillor said there was a dire need for a change in attitude and self-respect.
