Pearson Raqngani joined the ORT SA – Bidvest Second Chance programme in January this year.
This class of post-matriculants study maths and science each day in Alexandra to improve on their matric marks when they rewrite these subjects later this year.
Both ORT SA maths and science teachers said Raqngani is their best pupil and are expecting distinctions for him in both subjects. Mpho Matlala, head of the Teacher Empowerment Department at ORT SA said, “There are so many matriculants who wish to better their maths and science marks.
“What makes me so positive about the programme is that we have seen vast improvements in the assessments and mock exams, so far.”
Raqngani was given a LED rechargeable spotlight by Tsolo Sebotha, his maths teacher. He could not study at night as the informal settlement where he lives has no electricity.
Raqngani was so excited and he brings the lamp each day to charge in class. He has registered at the University of the Witwatersrand for next year to do mechanical or electrical engineering but has no bursary, as yet.
