Man defrauds employer to support ailing mom

ALEXANDRA - Read how a man receives a suspended sentence for fraud after admitting to the crime he committed to support his ailing mother.

The Alexandra Magistrates’ Court recently sentenced a man to seven years, wholly suspended for five years, after he pleaded guilty to defrauding his former employer of R158 000.

Peter Buys (41) of Orchards, Pretoria, admitted to committing the fraud between September 2014 and May last year at Chrysler Motors Midrand where he was employed as a credit clerk.

The court heard that he transferred the amount in six instalments into his personal bank account. It was said that the accused confessed the crime to the company’s manager when an external audit process was in progress.

In mitigation, he said that he needed the money for the medical treatment of his mother who had cancer. The mother subsequently died. The accused also apologised to the court and his former employer for his action.

The total amount was recovered through forfeiture of his provident fund.
