Members of the South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) Gender Desk in Alexandra visited Bombani Shelter for Abused Women to extend a helping hand by donating sanitary towels and toiletries.
Banothile Mokati convener of the gender desk said they decided to extend a helping hand to different community-based organisations that help make Alexandra a better place to live in.
“We chose Bombani as one of the places that we will visit to donate sanitary towels and toiletries so that those women who come here to seek help can have something to use during their stay in the facility. We are not only teachers but we are also part of the community,” she said.
According to Carol Madia of Bombani, the centre provides shelter and counseling to victims of domestic violence for a duration of six months before going back to their families. During their stay at the shelter, they receive counseling from professionals and those in need of any medical attention will be attended to by resident nurses.
“The shelter currently has 12 women who are receiving help in the facility. The donated items will go a long way in helping us as the centre and our facility users,” said Madia.
The teachers union also visited Refilwe Legae and Alexandra Hospice as part of their campaign to lend a helping hand.
